COURSE PROGRAMME 2008

 

GROUP MEDITATION – first Thursday of every month – 8pm
There will be a half-hour meditation with an opportunity for questions, followed by tea and biscuits.

INTRODUCTION TO MEDITATION with Eliza Harrison
Saturday 19 January 10.30am – 4.30pm
The practice of meditation is effortless and simple to learn and is taught as a day course with a follow-up session two to three weeks later. Students are given a full explanation of how the technique of meditation works, the process of release, and the benefits that occur on many different levels. By the end of the day, everyone is able to meditate with ease, understanding the process and enjoying the results.
The suggested donation of £90 includes the day course and follow-up sessions as required.
No deposit is necessary but booking is essential.

YOGA – THE OPENING OF THE HEART with Neil Pendlebury
Saturday 16 February 10am
Neil teaches yoga in South Lakeland but he began his practice in London in 1991. He undertook teacher training with the Sivananda Vedanta Yoga Organisation where he attained Yoga Sironami. During the day Neil will use a combination of classical Hatha and Tantra yoga practices to facilitate the ‘opening of the heart’.

FROM ALNMOUTH FRIARY TO WALSINGHAM with Brother Paschal
Saturday 23 February 10am – 1pm
Brother Paschal joined the Franciscans in 1977 and has been guest brother and guardian at Alnmouth Friary for fourteen years. He is soon to move to Walsingham where he will start a new Franciscan House. Brother Paschal has profound spiritual wisdom and radiates joy, warmth, humour and gentleness – we are delighted to welcome Brother Paschal once again to Dent to talk about this new venture in his life.
Suggested donation: £30 to include a light lunch with wine afterwards. Deposit of £15 required.

THE PRACTICE OF YIQUAN with Ian Macpherson
Saturday 1 March 10am – 4.30pm
Yiquan literally means ‘mind boxing’ and is a Chinese Internal Martial Art that cultivates alert presence with enhanced awareness. It focuses specifically on developing Qi and Jin, the qualities of energy and internal strength. Ian has practised Tai Chi for over twenty-five years and also teaches Qi Gong for health.

MANTRA, MUDRAS AND THE MYSTICS with Uma Krishnamurthy
Saturday 5 April – Sunday 6 April
Uma lives in southern India and is imbued with her country’s spiritual tradition. She comes from a line of Brahmins and, in the past, has been involved in retreats with Krishnamurti and other great teachers of our time. Through her teachings, insights and stories she will give us a rare and authentic taste of India’s mystical teachings.

YOGA – AWARENESS IN PRACTICE with John Stirk
Saturday 26 April – Sunday 27 April
John Stirk is an osteopath and one of Britain’s leading yoga teachers. He encourages his students to work with their own innate intelligence, enabling them to ‘extend physically without force and to expand consciousness without imposition’. John has a profound understanding of biomechanics as well as the process of self-development and, through his own intuitive guidance, breathes new vitality into yoga.

SUFISM AND MEDITATION with Eliza Harrison and George Masri
Saturday 10 May – Sunday 11 May
This is an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the true potential of spiritual practice. Eliza will guide us through different meditations that will allow us draw upon our innate creative energy, while George will introduce us to the mystical tradition of Sufism. George has been involved with the Whirling Dervishes for over thirty years and will offer us insights into practices that have captured the imagination of poets, painters and musicians over the centuries.Suggested donation: £120. People can attend for either day or the whole weekend

THE BENEFITS OF YOGA TO HEALTH with Dr Robin Monro, Dr Ruth Gilmore and Laura Clare
Saturday 17 May
For the past thirty years the Yoga Biomedical Trust has pioneered clinical work to investigate the efficacy of yoga for a wide range of medical conditions. Dr Robin Monro is the Founder and Director of the Trust and it is a privilege to welcome him and his colleague Dr Ruth Gilmore, to discuss their work and findings. The day will be of special interest to all those involved in the medical and healing professions, as the benefits of yoga to health and well-being are now being increasingly recognised.

QI RUNNING with Gavin Towers – Founder of UKTQF
Saturday 31 May
Gavin has competed nationally in marathon and triathlon and is also a highly accomplished teacher of Tai Chi Chuan and Qi Gong. During the day we will learn how to align ourselves with the natural force of gravity allowing the subtle energy of Qi to flow more freely, enabling us to run faster, more effortlessly and without strain or injury. The day is suitable for beginners, joggers and for all those who want to improve their personal fitness.

YOGA FOR MEDITATION with Gabriella Maass
Saturday 7 June 10.30am
Gabriella has trained with some of the world’s leading teachers and combines their wisdom with her own personal vision and experience. She is an inspirational teacher and her workshops are profoundly rewarding. Gabriella teaches mixed ability groups but she recommends that people attending her workshops have a regular yoga practice.

BODY AWARENESS THROUGH MUSIC AND DANCE with Franca Zuin
Saturday 21 June – Sunday 22 June
Franca is an inspirational teacher who has studied dance and movement across the world. She takes her students on an unforgettable journey allowing them to experience the heartbeat of Africa, the grace of India, the sensuality of Latin America, and the power of gypsy dance as expressed in Flamenco. She also has a deep understanding of how dance helps us to release tension and inhibition so that we are able to express our true nature – by letting ourselves go, we open the door to self-confidence and sensuality.

SACRED SOUND WITH YOGA with Frank Perry and Laura Clare
Saturday 19 July – Sunday 20 July
References to the magical effects of sound are embedded in the spiritual teachings of all major faiths and Frank has earned the reputation of being one of the greatest sound healers of our time. Throughout the weekend we will hear a range of sounds that will lead us to transcendent realms of inner peace and tranquillity, while Laura will guide us through a series of yoga asanas to enhance the experience.

MEDITATION AND SELF-TRANSFORMATION with Eliza Harrison

This is a chance to experience different meditation practices and discover within ourselves deeper states of silence, stillness and compassion. As we open ourselves up to the spiritual dimension, patterns that limit us are transmuted at the deepest core of our being. This is a profound and transformative weekend and it is preferable that those taking part have attended the Introduction to Meditation day.

YOGA PSYCHOLOGY AND POSITIVE MENTAL HEALTH with Uma Krishnamurthy
Friday evening 29th August - Saturday 30 August
Uma not only imbibes the mystical tradition of India but she is also a practising clinical psychologist and is in the unique position of being able to draw together western ideas and eastern spirituality. During the weekend she will offer insight into how spiritual practice dissolves the limitations of the ego so that consciousness can expand and self-integration can take place. Uma is a captivating speaker and imparts profound wisdom with humour and lightness.

WILD GOOSE QI GONG with June Parker
Saturday 20 September  10am
Wild Goose Qi Gong is a series of movements designed to regulate and benefit the body and mind as a whole. It is believed to have originated from Taoist monks in the Kunlun mountains of China. The movements clear energy channels, stimulate the organs and calm the mind, having profound effects on health and well-being. June is a teacher of Qi Gong for the UK Taiji Qigong Foundation and a practising acupuncturist.

YOGA – DEEPENING OUR PRACTICE with John Stirk
Saturday 4 October – Sunday 5 October
This course will be a follow-on from previous courses that John has given in Dent. He will lead his students into deeper states of asana practice with minimum effort, allowing dynamic energy to be awakened and long-term tension to be released.

THE RESONANT VOICE OF THE SOUL with Olivea Dewhurst Maddock, Deborah Thorne and Julie Darling
Saturday 18 October – Sunday 19 October
Our voice sounds the truth of our inner world and, through vibration and tone, it gives form to our thoughts, ideas, feelings and aspirations. During the weekend Olivea, supported by Julie on the harp and Deborah on the cello, will help us experience the vibration that resonates deep within the core of our being.

FLAMENCO: DISCOVERING OUR HIDDEN POTENTIAL with Anna Dueñas León
Saturday 8 November – Sunday 9 November
Anna is a teacher of great talent, wisdom and sensitivity who inspires her students to express their creative energy, radiance and sensuality through the dance of Flamenco. She fills her students with self-confidence and enthusiasm and people are transformed by the dance. The course is suitable for everyone – no experience in dance or movement is necessary.
Students should wear comfortable boots or shoes with a low heel – not stilettos or trainers

CLASSICAL YOGA with Laura Clare
Saturday 6 December 10.30am
The day represents a return to the essence of yoga as expressed and taught in the ancient teachings of the Upanishads and the Bhagavad-Gita. There will be a combination of opening and releasing asana practice, pranayama, yoga nidra and meditation. The day will offer a truer understanding of this ancient teaching.

NEW YEAR’S EVE – Candlelit group meditation at 6pm

YOGA TUITION with Laura Clare
Laura is the resident yoga teacher. She enables her students to achieve a state of restful alertness in which tension is released from the body and innate vitality is reawakened. Through her classes and personal tuition, she offers people of all ages and abilities the experience and understanding of yoga in its fullest sense.
