About Meditation

Anyone can meditate. This simple practice requires no effort or skill, nor does it involve concentration or clearing the mind of thoughts. It allows the body to experience a profound state of rest while the mind becomes quiet and alert. Deep-rooted stresses are released in a completely natural way, benefiting all aspects of health and wellbeing.

The Benefits

The benefits of meditation are wide ranging and occur on many levels as extensive scientific research has shown.

Physically, the body is healthier as stress levels decrease and the immune system is strengthened; mentally, there is greater energy and focus; emotionally, there is an increase in confidence and stability; and spiritually there is a growing sense of calm and connectedness.

As tensions are released, the creative potential that lies within each one of us is unlocked and expressed in a way that suits the talents and characteristics of the individual. Horizons expand, clarity of vision increases and people experience greater happiness and fulfillment in all aspects of life.

Learning Meditation

The practice is easy - the results are profound. The importance of having a teacher is to enable every student to experience the complete effortlessness of meditation. It is this that eludes so many, yet it is easily attainable by all. Through the proper use of a simple technique all the benefits come, and it is the teacher’s skill that enables every student to have this experience.

The teaching takes place in small groups and is relaxed and interactive. Questions are answered and experiences explained and, by the end of a course, everyone has a meditation practice that they can use at home, understanding the process and enjoying the results.

The practices taught are age-old, universal and transcend all boundaries. No belief is required, no belief is imposed, and there is no need for any change in diet or lifestyle.

FAQS

Do I have to give up anything?
There is no need for any change in lifestyle, diet or belief. All the benefits come from setting aside 15-20 minutes a day and meditation is a relaxing and enjoyable experience.
Do I have to believe in it for it to work?
No, meditation involves the use of a simple technique that allows a profound state of rest to be achieved and deep-rooted stresses to be dissolved – it works whether you believe in it or not.
Do I have to sit cross-legged?
No. Meditation can be practised lying down, kneeling or sitting comfortably in a chair.
When do I expect to see benefits?
Some people experience benefits within days and for others they emerge more gradually. Often the benefits come where you least expect them.
Will meditation conflict with my faith?
Not at all – people from different faiths learn meditation at the Centre. There is no belief system attached to the practice so there is no conflict.
Will coffee or tea affect my meditation?
We have delicious coffee, biscuits and different kinds of tea at the Centre and everyone has what they want. However it’s better to meditate before meals rather than after.
Do I need a quiet place to meditate?
General outside noise need not affect meditation, however a sudden disturbance may shock you as the mind and body become very still. People meditate in all sorts of places – on buses, trains, in cars and waiting rooms . . . anywhere you can sit down. You don’t need a special place.
What can I expect from a day’s Introduction to Meditation?
A relaxed, informal and interactive day and you won’t get bored!
How do I time my meditation?
Open your eyes and look at your watch. If it’s not time, close your eyes and continue with the practice. During meditation the mind is awake even though the body is in a deep state of rest.
